Welcome Chuck, it's great to have you here on RMR. Whatever scale we are modeling, most of us enjoy good modeling in all scales.

You got me beat with those decoder installs. I only did about 1,500 or so over about 25 years, almost all N Scale.

If I remember right, you purchased an Intermountain F7b from me that I cut the sides off and swapped them side to side. Then I painted it in UP with RI logos. That was when we got to know each other. I believe that was 2006?
You know what, you're memory is better than mine. You are correct sir.
Here's the loco. It too is still running off miles!

      Rule #1 of model railroading.
It's probably responsible for the greatest number of shoddy layouts because no one feels compelled to improve themselves. Meh, good enough...

Thanks, Brad! Yep the early days of N scale decoder installations where every frame needed to be cut to fit a great big decoder. Don’t miss that! 1500 N decoders is a bunch! Fortunately I did a lot of HO and a lot of brass.

          Hi Chuck:

I would also like to welcome you to the forum. Pleased to see that there are still people out there having fun with 3 rail scale. While I was always an HO modeler, from 2003 to 2014 I also modeled in 3 rail scale with a modular Hi-rail group called the Independent Hi-Railers Midwest division. During this period I also helped one of the members build his home 3 rail layout which also utilized Atlas 3 rail track. Decided to focus solely on my HO railroad in 2014, but have many fond memories of my time in O scale.

BTW, being frugal, I used to put down a layer of play sand (which was about $25.00 a bag at the local Home Despot) prior to final ballast with Woodland Scenics Large Ballast. We used a 2:1 mix of dark grey and cinders on the main lines.

          Regards,
          Jerry

Modules were built and owned by Terry Wellman. My weathered 3rd Rail Northern Pacific Z-6. The three freight cars in the pics were Pecos River and Atlas that I put Kadees on, and weathered.

Jerry, Thanks for the welcome and the great tip on the sand. Much cheaper than using all ballast. I’m going to the LHS tomorrow to get more ballast. Looks like I’ll be going to Home Depot also!

That photo is amazing. Very nice!

Holy smoke that is fantastic work...!!!

I'm Alan Sorum in Valdez, Alaska. I have a freelance HO layout in a roughly 16' x 16' basement room that I call the Northern AT&SF. I tend to have equipment from the mid-60s. The layout uses Digitrax gear, I have JMRI running on a Raspberry Pi and use WiThrottle with an iPad. I have a Prusa MK4 3D printer and use it a lot building structures and cars for the layout.

            Welcome aboard Alan!

Hey everyone... sorry I haven't introduced myself sooner but was lurking around to see how things were first. I've been talking with another member here who I won't mention by name (not sure if that would be okay with him is only reason) but most Model Railroad forums have descended into chaos and have little good content.

So with that out of the way I'm just going to start off and say I'm pretty damn impressed with the modeling I see here. Hoping I can contribute some worthwhile content.

I have been modeling ever since I can remember (I have taken 56 trips around the sun 🀣), I've built several layouts N, HO and even HOn3 each time I feel I improved my skill over time especially since I have been very fortunate to have some great mentors as well as I've consumed as much information from books, forums and videos from great modelers such as I've seen here on RMR. Always looking to improve my skill set and results not to mention have some comradery along the way.

My current layout is N scale, I have roughly a 24' x 14' space. Era is early 1980's and I am going to freelance. Railroad will be a class II that has barely left it's class III shortline roots. Roadname is the: Alleghany & Southern RR with reporting marks of ASR.

Well not sure what much else to say. Feel free to message me or I think my email is accessible to the members of this forum drop me a line.

Oh and I'm in the Winston-Salem, North Carolina area....

I have to give anyone a hard time if they aren't in "my scale" of 1/29. 😜

These N scalers might be slowly influencing a decision in 20+ years.. πŸ™„

Hi Ben and welcome. Spent 10 great years in central NC (Greensboro) and enjoyed operating on quite a few N scale layouts. Unfortunately many of them are gone. Good memories and great people.

Hello! I'm Marshall Peterson and I'm addicted to trains.... 😁 Oops wrong group.

I model the SP in East Texas in the early 1990's. My previous shelf layout came down about 2 years ago and have started the journey to build a portion of SP's Lufkin Sub in Free-moN modules.

I help co-lead Lone Star Free-moN along with Greg. I am also the proprietor of MP Scale Models which does 3d printed model railroad items.

My day job is in construction and I have two elementary aged kids which keeps me busy when not playing, I mean operating, trains... Click image for larger version
