UK OO Goathland the model and photos of the real thing

    Thank you for hosting me.

Please shout out if I break any rules.

I am dedicated to fooling the beholder, for just a split second.
Let me hold my hand up now and point out that with very little modification the buildings are resin and shop bought, not modelled by me,and I want you to be fully aware of what is my work and what is not.
Also a number of US modeller also do this layout because of the Harry Potter connection, in the U.K, England, the village and station of Goathland were used for filming a TV series Heartbeat, and I do the village and the station, the village has got some non prototypical features to cover fitting into my loft, but the station is to scale 1:76 and except for the fact I soon discovered that a railway set which is half 4mm and half 3.5mm means you have to compromise especially on the space required for the track detail to fit I have endeavoured to follow faithfully.
Along the way I have used photos I do not have the rights to display here, but I have enough taken and permission granted from Goathland enthusiasts to give you more than enough comparison.
Goathland has a long history it was shut down in the closures when large tracks of the UK railway was deemed unconomical, but private purchasers bought the whole line inc other stations, they also adjusted slightly the tracks, which I can expand on later, and added a platform walk bridge here and at one of the other stations for passenger safety. The early green paint was long since rep, aced with magenta, aging and cleaning can lead to some discrepancies, and I have bought three versions of the station and other buildings choosing the ones I believed work best, the size between buildings are amazingly different even from the same manufacturer who did two versions, one making the best of the platform side then in my opinion a smaller collection improved for the rear, at which point I pulled out the whole station turned it 180 degrees and restarted. in the meantime I had learnt a lot about the station and I hope that together with time for my skills to improve have given me a better layout.

Well after the verbose introduction I had best offer some photos.
first the real entrance then 2 of the model for comparison.

Hmm it just shows the first picture as you open so I will add the model again for my purposes.
The layout is in my loft but benefits from velum windows and blinds the natural light helps with the believability.Thankfully.
his shows the rear of the station, in the last couple of years a new building has been built as yet I have not included it as I tend to model with a view to the 1960s.

ID:	5390 To the side of the main platforms is a coal drop and beyond the main station, with a cobbled area, nowadays the engine shed to the left is a cafe with a new opening and picnic tables but again I model it years before this occurred, the real thing

Luckily a number of manufacturers have targeted Goathland, and thus detailing such as benches and working lampposts can be found if you research well, not in this picture but on the p,atform I also have the milkchurns. The cobbles are hand carved into foam, something I will expand on later.

Even photos of the weir side landscape have been sourced allowing a reasonable facsimile to be modeled

Welcome, Jaz avalley! That's impressive modeling. I too love British railways and had a 4mm layout myself once, a former LMS branch set in the 1950s.

Thank you. This is the NYMR North Yorkshire Moors Railway, although you had the best era imo
I run others, but because of how your forum is structured I thought this the most appropriate to fit your guidelines.

I love all aspects of modelling, and perhaps I should remember this is a railway forum and put up some rolling stock, now because Goathland is preservation and it gets visitors, sometimes even overseas visitors you may see some stock you might think is iffy, I certainly suspect anyone who knows their trains will point out that the Harry Potter locomotive is rarely modeled on the correct loco! Still some rolling stock to wet your appetite

i have considered taking the plastic fence off and making my own, using the same material, and I keep meaning to snag the red sign size it print it off and add it, I have done that on the main building and easy enough to do

Wagons, for sone reason they won’t load up in order, but I think you get the idea, just do not ask which kadees because off the top of my head I forget, nowadays I usually put the paint I use in the picture to remind myself, but again you get the idea,I often dull down with powder as the last touch so no shine, and I very very rarely use enamel, prefer acrylic but use several brand and am not above mixing colours to get what I want
