Hey guys, I have been out of model railroading for a while. I'm working toward a plan to get back in. I've decided to model the Sandersville Railroad operations in Georgia. Back in the early 90's, when I went railfanning, my favorite train to see was 118 and 119 Macon, GA to Linwood Yard. The trains would consist of mostly white covered Kaolin tanks and covered hoppers. I recall some Big John Southern covered hoppers as well. The train was easy to identify (much easier than today with nothing but stacks).
The concept is pretty straightforward. Modeling the Southern Railway (technically Norfolk Southern), but still Southern units in my world in the late 80s/early 90s. The Southern Railway mainline storage track will serve as a visible staging yard. Each session will start with the Sandersville Railroad starting at its own yard, traveling to the Southern Railway, picking up cars from the Southern, traveling back to its yard, sorting out the cars, and serve the various Kaolin mines. The mines would be operated by ECC International, JM Huber, and Engelhard.
To add some interest, I will only allow the plants to be switched at certain times due to loading dry or liquid kaolin. I will create a random time generator to determine which plan can be worked when so it's not the same each time.
Loaded cars will be gathered at the Sandersville yard. At the end of the day, they will shove the cut of loaded cars out to the mainline storage track for the Southern to pick up at night to transport to Macon, Georgia for further classification.
I have created a website and blog to post the progress of the layout. The Sandersville Railroad in HO Scale.
Follow along my adventure in returning to model railroading. Looking forward to the discussion.
In the past, I modeled a couple renditions of the Rock Island Railroad in N Scale. My favorite was modeling the sand operations near Ottawa, Illinois. My old blog is The Rock Island: Ottawa Sands in N Scale.
