TrainTraxx RFID Project on the HO Scale Sandersville Railroad

Welp, I'm taking the plunge. I was completely blown away a few years ago when I saw the RFID technology used on the KCS 3rd Sub layout. I wanted it! I wanted it bad! How freaking cool! Here's the video that originally caught my attention: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v2rSqCuwZlU&t

Fast forward a few weeks ago when I was scrolling on Facebook to land on a recent Southern Transcon Model Railroad (https://www.facebook.com/groups/292869778951989) post. To read that he is implementing a commercially available RFID system. Wait, what?

I watched all the videos. You can see them here. https://www.traintraxx.com/

I still had some questions. I filled out the contact form and began communicating with one of the partners Carlton Brown. He took over an hour on a Zoom call to explain the entire system to me, show me what I can do with it, and discuss how to utilize it on my layout. Now, that's some incredible customer service.

So, I pulled the trigger. The kit is arriving tomorrow! I'm excited to share my journey into the world of RFID Technology for Model Railroads. Follow along to see how it goes, ask questions, and provide input. It should be an interesting ride! 😊

Here is an updated layout plan (which I don't think I have uploaded one recently). This includes the power lines I plan to run on the layout as well. I will have 16 RFID readers on the layout and are indicated by the purple triangles.

I received the kit from TrainTraxx and started the process of setting up the system. Read more about it here. https://realisticmodelrailroading.ne...5049#post25049

Steven, would you know if this will lead to JMRI becoming automated? My past experience with JMRI OPS is it takes quite a bit of baby sitting in order for the system to know how a train and the cars are progressing. It's bean a while for me so don't hesitate to tell me my thinking is way out dated. I would think this would be a great way to tell JMRI a train has completed its job and develop new train orders without any further inputs.

I am quite far from the ops aspect but sure would like a solution in hand.

    Hi John,

It appears it will as TrainTraxx has worked with JMRI to integrate their system with it. Time will tell for sure, but I will make sure to post my findings.
